Conclusion
Assessment is vital to the success of University of the West. Without it, we cannot know where we are, let alone where we have come from or where we are going. A university education is about more than just grade point averages, according to the mission of UWest. Therefore, we need to assess more than just assignments and grades. We need to assess the whole person. We must ensure that our academics really are underpinned by Buddhist wisdom and values, as we claim. Finally, we should also be able to tell if we are truly instilling understanding and appreciation for both the East and the West in all the students who pass through our doors. We need comprehensive assessment in order to do that.
CLO rubrics might appear as simply more paperwork and yet another added burden on professors. However, they are essential if we are going to walk the walk rather than just talk the talk of our mission. Further, assessment is required by our accreditation body, WASC. In time, assessment will even aid professors directly in strengthening their curriculum and teaching skills.
When creating your rubrics, remember to start with the Institutional Learning Outcomes and the Program Learning Outcomes of your academic department. Download your department’s CLO template. When finished, submit your final rubric to your department chair for approval. Work with them to resolve any questions or comments. Then at the end of the semester log into Taskstream to fill out one rubric per student per class. The university will be performing ongoing analysis and evaluation of the data and publishing periodic reports on how well we are living up to our mission.

Personal Note: Much thanks and appreciation to Dr. Kenneth Locke, Dean of Administration, and Dr. William Howe, Dean of Academics, for their guidance and input on their project. Also thanks to all the hardworking team members of the Mission and Identity Committee (MIC) and the University Wide Assessment Committee (UWAC) for putting this framework in place.
