Involving students in faculty research projects not only provides much needed experience to students, but also provides desperately needed assistance to overworked professors.  However, students are far more than cheap labor.  Collaborating with a student stretches the professor, gives him or her new insights into the research, and expands the skill set being brought to bear on the topic.
